Teacher script to introduce film

Olympic and Paralympic values

  • Determination

Ask pupils - would you like to compete in the Olympics?

Do you think you could do all of that training? Do you think you could do it on your own?

Most athlete's training for elite sport are part of a team. They train with their team mates and coaches.

Nader el Masri was the only athlete from Gaza to compete at the 2008 Olympics in Beijing, and one of four Palestinians in total.

Going solo: 5000m training

  • Qualifying time 13:20
  • Nader's personal best: 14:00

He lives in Gaza, a strip of land, west of Israel isolated from other Palestinan territories with few sports facilities.

There are no other long distance runners at Nader's level.

Show film and use discussion prompts afterwards. Email worldclass@bbc.co.uk if you would like a copy of this film to download

Ask the Assembly Question

Do you think it's easier training on your own, or more difficult?

Apart from the physical difficulties like stamina, heat etc. what are the mental challenges?

What do you think motivates Nader to keep going?

Since the film was made, we've found out that Nader hasn't qualified for the Olympics but says he'll keep running.

Ask the Assembly Question

Would you carry on running if you didn't qualify?

Email your school's answer to worldclass@bbc.co.uk
