Schools Spotlight on Team Majlinda Kelmendi

St Mary's College, Hull, is twinned with Ali Hadri High School, Kosovo

Mark Arridge, Director of Sport, St Mary's College writes:

St Mary's hosts visitors from their Kosovan Olympic Dreams twin, Ali Hadri

The partnership between St Mary's and Ali Hadri High School continues to develop, through a range of both curricular and extra-curricular activities.

A group of students have been established as a World Class Olympic Dreams Council. These students have delivered assemblies to all our year groups to promote the link between the schools, and highlight historical, environmental and cultural differences and similarities between the UK and Kosovo.

Overall, we have tried to allow the project to impact on as many curriculum areas as possible. In Food Technology students have exchanged traditional recipes from their home countries and have prepared these.

In Art and Design, students have designed their own Link Logos between the two schools and these were sent to staff and students of Ali Hadri High School who then chose their favourite.

During the school's upcoming annual International Week, the focus will be on the link with Kosovo - each subject area will look at a topic related to the project. For example, History will explore recent conflicts, Geography the climate, and RE the religions practiced.

And in January 2011, we were delighted to welcome two visitors from Ali Hadri High School. We were able to spend time in school with our visitors going into a range of lessons and assemblies. Our students were extremely interested in meeting the visitors and a number of question and answer sessions were held.

As a Sports College, sport is very high profile within St Mary's and our students were very keen to find out if this was the case in Kosovo and at the Ali Hadri High School. We demonstrated to them a number of popular sports in Hull and England, such as rugby league.

This included a personalised tour of Hull's KC Stadium and presenting our visitors with shirts from the professional rugby clubs (Hull FC and Hull Kingston Rovers) and Hull City AFC.

There was considerable interest from BBC Radio Humberside and Look North who both featured the project and visit on their broadcasts.

Coming up: sports leaders from St Mary's College to visit Kosovo in early 2012.
