I first
became interested in weather during ‘O’ levels geography lessons.
I realised
that a career in meteorology required maths and physics which were
never really my forte.
So
when I left school in Cornwall I worked in insurance for a year
whilst waiting to begin a career in Customs and Excise.
But
one day I saw a job advertisement for the Met Office and very soon
after, found myself working at RAF Lyneham.
I
spent three years working in the county before other postings at
other stations across Southern England followed.
After
a good deal of studying to HNC level I was accepted on a forecasting
course and a posting to Bristol followed back in 1990. I have been
here ever since.

| Richard
Angwin - Wiltshire weather is his expertise. |
Forecasting
the weather for Wiltshire might seem to be a relatively straightforward
business. It is land-locked and, Salisbury Plain apart, relatively
flat. But it does pose some challenges.
Sea
breezes, from the Bristol and English Channels, can sometimes make
it milder than one would expect. And low cloud from the east coast
can spoil what would otherwise have been a sunny day.
After
12 years forecasting for the county I now feel I have just about
got the measure of the county weatherwise.
So
whether it is appearing on BBC Points West each evening,
or BBC Wiltshire Sound every weekday I hope to keep everyone
up-to-date with all the latest weather news.
When
the BBC does let me have time away from my weather charts I do enjoy
travelling, having been to the USA, Egypt, Indonesia and Vietnam
in the last few years.
I
still walk around the county with my dalmatian, Poppy, during the
drier months. And when snow is in the air I can usually be found
waxing my skis and planning a trip to the Alps.
