On Saturday 16th March, villagers in Neston will celebrate the achievement
of their Millennium project.
Individuals, families and community groups will plant oak, walnut
and silver birch trees donated by the International Tree Foundation,
install seating on the Recreation Ground and Andrea Garrihy, local
Corsham artist, will untie her Millennium Knot sculpture, carved from
local stone.
Project coordinator Nikki Kenna explained the project has taken two
years to come to fruition.
She said it had brought diverse members of the community together.
"Quarrymen have worked with artists, school children with architects
and farmers with writers. People have been so incredibly supportive."
Children from Neston Primary School have also been involved.
They have made their own versions of the sculptures from plaster blocks
and made a large model of the village as part of a "Planning for Real"
exercise with Jackie Cooper Bennett from Community First.
The model will be on display in the village hall so that people can
place suggestions for the things they want to see happening in Neston.
Children will also be singing a specially composed song and reading
poetry during the ceremony conducted by Rev Richard Hovey.

Farmer
Jeff Knapp, told children at Neston Primary School how proud they
should be to take part in such a project.
He remembers planting trees outside the school when he was a boy more
than 60-years-ago.
Many community groups have joined resources to develop the day into
a celebration of achievements in Neston.
These include the Memorial Hall Initiative, The Skate Facility Project
and community groups.
The projects have received Lottery funds and over £2000 of support
and donations from individuals and local companies has been raised.
The ceremony at 2.00pm is due to be opened by Bishop John Neale and
attended by James Gray MP. |
