With
Paul McKenna's notorious Hypnotic Show due at Swindon’s Wyvern Theatre
this month we just had to have a chat with the celebrity TV hypnotist...
... but not face to face. |

For many
people hypnosis is, at best, a hoax and at worse a dangerous and unknown
phenomena.
But what exactly is hypnosis? can anyone be hypnotised? and can it
cure you addictions?
For advocates hypnosis literally means turning off the conscious part
of your mind and freeing up the sub-conscious to … well just about
anything really.
From improving your public speaking skills to giving up smoking, from
overcoming a fear of flying, to impersonating Elvis in front of a
packed theatre.

But, according
to specialists, under hypnosis you are not asleep nor are you unconscious.
Instead you are in a state of consciousness in which you ‘let things
happen’ through your subconscious mind rather than trying to make
them happen with your conscious mind.
And you are always fully in control.
For Britain's premier TV hypnotist, Paul McKenna, the effects of hypnosis
are much more interesting then the explanations.
He has even been quoted, in the past, as saying that there is no such
thing as hypnotism and that in his stage show he puts suggestible
people in situations where they willingly do what he tells them to
do.
On Wednesday, November 27, Paul McKenna is bringing his notorious
Hypnotic Show to Swindon’s Wyvern Theatre.
So we decided catch up with him and find out more…
So can anyone be hypnotised?
"Yes, though people will respond better to some hypnotists. Although
everyone can be hypnotised the best subjects are usually those who
want to be hypnotised and will allow it to happen.
"From the people who volunteer, I select the people who I think will
be among the most creative and imaginative. I hypnotise them and get
them to do progressively dafter and funnier stuff.
Have you always been able to hypnotise people?
"No, it’s something you learn to do. I actually went to interview
the local hypnotist, years ago when I was working in local radio.
I was into yoga and meditation and so I said go on hypnotise me I
feel a bit stressed and I felt very relaxed afterwards and actually
a bit euphoric.
"They lent me some books on it so I went away and started hypnotising
my friends to lose weight and quit smoking. And then I’d be at a party
and everyone would say make Fred think he’s a Kangaroo or something
like that and then we’d all fall about laughing.
Do you think hypnosis can help cure food addictions?
"Hypnotherapy works really well with weight loss and food addictions
because it helps the person change the way they view food and how
they eat. It works well because it helps improve motivation and we
can build a more positive attitude towards themselves.
"It's really important to heal the person inside before any external
changes can take place. When that person begins to feel happier and
more motivated the results are amazing."
Do you see yourself more as an entertainer or as a teacher?
"The shows are really my hobby. I have the largest hypnosis training
company in the world.
"In this show, I’m an entertainer, but when I’m teaching a seminar
or with someone one-to-one, I’m very much a psychotherapist. They’re
two very distinct jobs."
To find out more or to experience hypnosis for yourself Paul
McKenna's Hypnotic Show will be at the Wyvern Theatre, in Swindon,
on Wednesday November, 27.
