It's
2004 and a new era in rock music beckons because, apparently....
emo is so yesterday.
After
being rubbed in all the right places, The Aladdins have arrived
onto the Swindon music scene in a puff of smoke (or possibly ganga
haze) to sweep away the cobwebs and bring a sense of the absurd
back to the scene.
They
may be a new band but their hype even managed to penetrate the hermetically-sealed
walls of BBC Wiltshire towers.
As
a result, the only thing for it was to get them in for an interview
where we gained a unique insight into the wild and wacky world of
The Aladdins.
Some
might say obnoxious, some might say outspoken, but the band set
to make serious waves over the next 12 months could never be described
as boring. Read on.......
What
are the Aladdins all about?
Yogesh:
We're just rock and pretty much... saving the universe.
Timbo: As well as stopping emo and hardcore.
Yogesh: Emo is like a plague. Emo is an STD and we're like the condom!
Johnny: We're basically all about having a good time and making
happy music because everything is depressing at the moment.
How
would you describe the music of The Aladdins?
Van
Den: Arse-licking, bum-touching rock and willy!
Hot Dogg: The Aladdins are fun, fast, rock... it's British.
Influences?
Johnny:
Buzzcocks, old school punk.
Morg: The Stooges.
Yogesh: I'd like to say Kula Shaker but they'd kill me.
Hot Dogg: Robson and Jerome.
Timbo: Charles and Eddie.
How
did you all meet up?
Yogesh:
Last year it was just me, Van Den Branden and a kid named Joel.
We played the New College Battle of the Bands 2003. We pretty much
won but took second place. Then we did various gigs that were too
good to actually tell you about. Joel couldn't take the pressure,
we were just getting too big, too fast. We took a break then got
some new members. Added some new styles. We're currently recording
new material.
When
is it going to be available for people to buy?
Van
Den: We're not going to sell it. We're giving it away. We don't
agree with people selling their music when they're not even big.
What's
the name of the CD?
Van
Den: 'A Religion Worth Dying For'. People sell bad music so we're
going to give away good music.
What
has been the biggest thing to happen to The Aladdins so far?
Morg:
Forming as a band. When we came together - once we were whole we
knew nothing could ever break us apart.
Yogesh: Curing ear cancer pretty much. As soon as we get the CD
out, anyone with ear cancer - cured.
Van Den: I think we've redefined what lyrics are actually about.
Can
you quote some of these lyrics?
Johnny:
"We've got to bite past the sugar to get the bitter taste of acid".
Hot Dogg: What about "Any Day Now we're gonna kick your ass".
Yogesh: You can read our lyrics at our website - http://www.freewebs.com/thealaddins.
What
can people expect from an Aladdins gig?
Van
Den: It's not the sound of now, it's the sound of the future.
Johnny: It's impulsive. We don't know what we're doing.
Timbo: Basically we just get up there and have an awesome time and
show people how to party. Not just stand there and cry about our
girlfriends. Just not be depressing. There's so many crappy bands
like Any Day Now. To be fair they're musically good but you can't
pit to it, you can't mosh to it, you can't skank to it. You just
stand there.
What's
up next for the band?
Morg:
The basic plans are world domination. We're not going to stop at
anything short of that. Possibly universal domination.
Timbo: We will demolish emo after we've made all the other good
stuff happen.
The
Aladdins play New College Battle of the Bands at The Furnace on
Thursday 26th February at 8.00pm. Tickets are priced at £4.00 in
advance or £5.00 on the door.
