Twenty eight contemporary photographers were invited to submit a photograph of a single tree of their choice.

Each responded creatively, each with their own approach and style, with shots of trees in every shape and size from all over the world.

The result is Forest, a Southern Arts Touring Exhibition, which is on display at the Swindon Museum and Art Gallery until April 27.

Tree by Maria Lucia Cattani

Set against a backdrop of works drawn from the Swindon Art Collection the Forest stands grouped together in the centre of the gallery.

Each solitary tree image mounted on its own perspex stand.

The Forest invites you to wander through the exhibition as if you were exploring a real forest of trees.

But it's a forest of no specific time or place.

An image of a tree casting a deep shadow at the height of a Brazilian summer stands side by side with an ancient graffiti scarred beach tree. A palm tree silhouetted in the afternoon sun stands by a gnarled winter oak.

The overall feelings is of a meditation of time.

With each of the artists giving their reason for photographing their chosen tree the emotional connections man has with trees begins to emerge.

A tree casting a deep shadow the mirror image of itself was taken by photographer Maria Lucia Cattani. She explains:

"In Brazil in the summer, the shadow of a tree is sometimes more important than the tree itself, its shade protects us from the burning sun.

"Its shadow nearly reproduces its shape. The shadow also resembles the roots of the tree. The roots of many trees are as big as their branches. It is as if there is a copy of the tree underground."

Another image taken by Daro Montag is of a single fruit from a yew tree which he allowed to decompose on a piece of colour film. He explains:

"Each berry has the potential to become another yew tree which could last for thousands of years and it is this energy which has etched itself onto film.

"This print represents micro-biological activity but it also resembles the images sent back from outer space thus highlighting the universality of nature."

With trees dominating our landscape from the solitary and magnificent to the vast forest the Forest inspires you to take another look.
