FACTS

A staggering 262,000 people took part last year nationwide, including nearly 2,500 people from Wiltshire, and this year the RSPB hopes it will be even bigger and better.

The morning is the best time to look, when the birds are out and about feeding after a cold winter night.

Send in your results online by visiting the RSPB website where the survey form will be available from January until early February 2003.

Big Garden Birdwatch forms can also be obtained by phoning 0870 601 0215 (calls charged at national rate). To ensure you receive your pack on time please phone before 20 January 2003.

The survey aims to find the most commonly seen garden birds.

Will the familiar starling and house sparrow still be the two most common species and are they still declining?

Back in 1979, the first year of Big Garden Birdwatch, a national average of 15 starlings were seen per garden.

House sparrow
Will the house sparrow remain Wiltshire's top bird?

The results for last year’s survey revealed that this number had dropped alarmingly to just four.

The RSPB’s Big Garden Birdwatch was also one of the first indications of a fall in song thrush numbers in our gardens.

Today the song thrush isn’t even in Wiltshire’s top 10 common garden birds.

You don’t have to be an expert to take part.

Simply spend one hour over the weekend of 25th/26th January counting the birds in your garden or local park and record the highest number of each bird species seen at any one time.

Listen to Afternoon Show on BBC Radio Swindon and Wiltshire on Thursday 23rd January to find out more about the RSPB's Bird Watch weekend. They will be talking to Emma Soulger from the RSPB and meeting a head teacher and some children from one local school who are taking part.
