Residents
of Westbury are being invited to a public meeting to put forward their
views on a new theatre for the town.
A committee has been formed to bring together ideas and help launch
the campaign.
They say the venue could be used for stage plays, music and other
live entertainment.
Such a facility would also allow numerous local groups to meet at
a suitable, comfortable and accessible venue within the town.
Barbara Maxwell from the committee told BBC Wiltshire that the town
had nothing suitable at the moment.
"There's a school hall but that's difficult to book because it's
very busy - also the venue is too big for small intimate productions.
"One of the other venues is in an upstairs room so is not accessible
to people with disabilities.
"We haven't got anywhere in mind at the moment - we want to gauge
public support for the project first so that is why we have called
the meeting."
The meeting is planned for Monday 25th March 2002 at Westbury Football
Club, Meadow Lane, Westbury.
The committee would like to hear the views, comments and suggestions
of the people of Westbury, and there will be an opportunity to raise
any questions.
All are invited to attend the meeting , those people with an interest
in such a development, people who would like to join the committee
and especially local businesses or interested groups who would possibly
benefit from such a venue.
There is keen interest from local theatre groups too. Ian Cluley from
The White Horse Theatre Company said a dedicated venue is just what
the town needs:
"This is an exciting opportunity to bring a much-needed venue to the
town.
"It will enable groups such as ours to perform in our own theatre."
