Be
My Baby was first staged to unanimous acclaim by London's Soho Theatre
in 1998.
The
play, set in 1964, centres around 19 year old Mary who is seven
months pregnant and packing her bags in readiness for her mother
to whisk her off to a church run residential home for pregnant,
unmarried women.
The
play follows Mary on her poignant journey as she learns to cope
with her situation and fights a losing battle to retain her teenage
illusions about marrying and keeping the baby.
Despite
being cut off from their families and daily battles with a no-nonsense
matron, Mary and her new found friends at the home shine with youthful
effervescence.
Set
against a backdrop of the social attitudes of the 1960s, this beautifully
touching and funny piece, defined by the music of the day, movingly
transports us back to the dawn of the sexual revolution.
As
the girls sing along to the romantic fantasies of 60's hits by artists
such as the Ronettes, Dusty Springfield and the Shangri-Las,
they transport the audience back to a time when a Dansette record
player had the power to inspire aspirations of a future filled with
endless opportunity and promise.
Mary
is played by well known television actress Rebecca Callard.
Rebecca
started her career at an early age with the role of Arrietty in
the BBC's 1993 adaptation of The Borrowers.
At
the age of 18 she played Juliet in Judi Dench's Romeo and Juliet
in the Open Air Regents Park Theatre. Rebecca has also starred in
many TV programmes including Laura in BBC's Sunburn and two
series of ITV's The Grand as Kate Morris.
Queenie
is played by Kellie Bright who also began her career as a
child actress, playing the role of Joanna for six years in ITV's
The Upper Hand.
Kellie
has more recently been seen on film in Ali G in Da House,
as Ali G's girlfriend Julie and on TV as the character Cassie, in
ITV's Bad Girls. She was recently recognised for her theatre
work and nominated for an Ian Charleston Award for her role as Masha
in The Seagull at Manchester Royal Exchange. Kellie is also
known as Kate Aldridge on Radio 4's The Archers.
The
cast is completed by Hannah Storey as Norma, Hannah Watkins
as Dolores, Maggie Ollerenshaw as Matron and Liz Crowther
who plays Mary's mother, Mrs Adams.
