Swindon's alternative nightclub, Level 3 has not only undergone a change of name to The Furnace, but has also undergone over £60,000 worth of interior refurbishment.

Improvements include a wrought iron theme throughout which includes a spider's web design which is the first thing you see as you enter the club, and a new spiral staircase has been installed which provides a second route to the first floor.

The overhanging balcony has also been enlarged to accommodate a more spacious DJ booth which will also double as a sound mixing area for live gigs.

The brand new PA system and improved lighting that has been installed should help to return the club to its rightful place as a popular local music venue.

In the past it has seen the likes of The Fall, Chumbawamba and The Sisters of Mercy pass through its doors. A live music calendar is currently in the planning stages for 2002 and it is hoped Glastonbury retro-rockers, Reef, will be one of the first bands to play at the newly refurbished venue.

Both the downstairs and upstairs bar areas have been completely refurbished and modern wood floors have been laid both upstairs and on the dance stage. There is now central access to the dancefloor resided over by two imposing stone gargoyles.

The effect is finished off with wooden tables and chairs which overall adds to the new Gothic/Rustic feel.

The club has seen some hard times of late but with a new name, refurbishment, new playlist policy and the commitment to future live music events, it looks like being well on the road to recovery.
