If Doctor Who's current assistant Billie Piper really did have access to a Tardis, she'd doubtless jump back in time and tell her former self not to make Spirit Trap. Alas that isn't an option, which means we all have to endure this risible horror romp about five students unable to leave a haunted house in spooky north London. Shot on the cheap in Bucharest, David Smith's amateurish turkey is billed as "this summer's hottest British teen thriller". 'Hottest'? Wouldn't 'only' be nearer the mark?

Sweet-natured Jenny (Piper) can hardly believe her luck when her new student accommodation turns out to be a sprawling, fully furnished mansion. Who cares that her housemates include a coke-snorting drug dealer (Luke Mably), his posh totty girlfriend (Emma Catherwood) and a mysterious beauty with a Russian accent (R&B star Alsou)? But Jenny starts to question her good fortune when a dusty grandfather clock suddenly whirs into action, summoning the ghosts of the house's former occupants and preventing its new ones from escaping to the outside world.

"A LAUGHABLY BAD BRITFLICK"

Faced with such incoherent plotting, clunky dialogue and some truly diabolical acting, you'll be eager to do some escaping yourself. Treading similar ground to The Skeleton Key, itself no masterpiece, Smith's opus can at least boast a handsome set and a likeable performance from Sam Troughton (that's Patrick's grandson, Who fans) as the nerdy fifth tenant. But those are hardly reasons to waste your hard-earned on a laughably bad Britflick that's more in need of an exorcist than an audience.
