Wilton Windmill held a unique event at the end of May 2003. Locally grown organic sheaves of wheat were threshed, then milled and the resulting loaves baked on site - all in a day! And 2000 people came along for the experience!

FACTS

The Trust in conjunction with the County Council was responsible for restoring the Windmill.

The mill cost £500 to build in 1821, but 150 years later, it cost £25,000 to restore.

Wilton Windmill, now the only working windmill in Wessex, is operated by the Wilton Windmill Society, which exists to maintain the windmill in working order, and to keep it open to the public - especially to parties from local schools.

Wilton Windmill's 2003 Old Fashioned Country Fair is on Saturday 31st May, starting at 1300hrs.

Entrance is free.

All proceeds will go towards the development of the Wilton Windmill Society's interpretation display.

Wilton Windmill lies beyond Wilton village, a mile and a half from the A338 Hungerford-Burbage road at East Grafton.

From Sheaf to Loaf in a Day was the main event of the Wilton Windmill Society's 2003 Country Fair, when the public were invited to join in a day-long celebration at the only working windmill in Wessex.

Wilton Windmill was built in 1821 as a replacement for the seven watermills lost when the Kennet and Avon Canal was completed.

It employed the latest technology for it's time and was constructed by a local builder from Wilton.

The windmill was worked for 100 years during difficult times for farmers because of low corn prices.

In the 1920's, the advent of electric and steam powered mills had brought about the decline of most wind and water mills.

Wilton Windmill then lay idle for some 50 years and was eventually bought in 1971 by Wiltshire County Council and then leased to the Wiltshire Historic Buildings Trust.

The 2003 Old Fashioned Country Fair is the Society's principal fundraising event - a day-long fun event for all the family.
