The Science Museum is opening up one of it's seven vast aircraft hangers to the public, this weekend, for a new exhibition.

The theme is wood and paper and the exhibition follows a trail from the origins of the wood industry and wood management through to its uses in printing, paper making and recycling.

As the storage facility for the London Science Museum, the Wroughton Science Museum holds the largest and heaviest objects in the collection.

Over 18,000 objects are in storage including space rockets, fire engines, bicycles, scientific equipment and aircraft.

But on Saturday 25 and Sunday 26 October the star of the show will be the last Fleet Street hot metal printing press, the iconic 1930s Wood Press, which rolled off millions of newspapers in its lifetime.

Weighing in at a massive 140 tonnes the press was pulled out of the old Daily Mail building in 2001 and literally resurrected at the Science Museum Wroughton.

A son et lumiere show, being shown for the first time, promises to bring the giant press to life.

Screened hourly the show will take you back to the heyday of Fleet Street with real and spoof Pathe News Reels, slide shows and a muti-sensory sound and light demonstration

To accompany the exhibition there will be a weekend of events including hands on paper making, interactive games, quizzes, videos and a giant jigsaw.

Plus, on Saturday only, there will be guided walks with talks on coppicing and wood management, in nearby SSSI Clouts Wood, with the Wiltshire Wildlife Trust and kids workshops using paper and wood put on by Wiltsplay.

And of course there'll be the chance to wander around the Science Museum Wroughton's Aladdin's Cave of amazing objects including vintage cars, bicycles and storage racks stuffed to the rafters.
