"Evening
in Finland" by Matthew Harvey
|
The
title for the exhibition comes from a poem by the American poet,
Emily Dickinson, 'There's a certain slant of light on winter afternoons...'
that goes on to express the oppression of winter light.
The
paintings in the gallery reflect that aspect of winter, but they
also portray the particular luminosity of winter light and landscape.
The
five artists showing their winter landscapes are Rory Haran, Matthew
Harvey, Richard Hoare, Paul MacDermot and Jonathan Tetley.
Both
Matthew Harvey and Jonathan Tetley
have been in the Gallery in previous themed exhibitions and both
are known locally for exhibitions in other south of England venues.
Both
also exhibit in London. Matthew Harvey's particurar infinity to
Finland and Sweden makes his paintings especially apposite for this
exhibition.
