Inner Space – John Ford
Inner Space – John Ford A new exhibition, at the Fox Talbot Museum in Lacock near Chippenham, reveals the beauty of a hole in the ground in Utah.

Antelope Canyon, in Utah, is like nowhere else in North America.

Discovered just 70 year ago, by a young Navajo girl herding sheep in the area, it's one of the most artistically attractive rock cracks in the west.

With red sandstone walls, rising to a staggering 100 feet high in places, its narrow channels and passageways have literally been gouged out and scoured smooth by thousands of years of flash floods, wind and water-erosion.

As shafts of sunlight penetrate the narrow slit in the earth’s surface, they bounce from wall to canyon wall inspiring some of the most sensual abstract photography imaginable.

Photographer John Ford has spent a lot of time 'shooting' in this unearthly landscape.

The result is 'Inner Space' an exhibition which not only captures the colour and contrasts of this unique, natural phenomenon but does so in remarkable detail:

“Growing up on the Californian coast, I often wondered what the floor of the ocean would look like if drained. I imagined that, after extensive erosion and geological shifting over millions of years it would look like America's desert southwest, full of mountains, river valleys and slot canyons.

"That landscape is my first love; every time I am in it, I am inspired.”

The Museum, located inside a 15th century mediaeval barn at the entrance to Lacock Abbey, holds a permanent exhibition on the ground floor commemorating the achievements of the photographic pioneer Fox Talbot.

Inner Space, which runs until the end of July, will be exhibited in the Upper Gallery which shows up to three exhibitions per year of contemporary and 19th century photographers.
