Melksham's Big Girl on Koi Cam

She's the size of an average 6 year old... and now Melksham's mammoth fish is live on Koi-Cam

It was back in October that Rainbow Koi, in Melksham, took delivery of 'Su' a super-sized goldfish from Japan.

The mammoth fish, originally nicknamed 'Big Girl', not only measured a whopping 4 foot long but weighed in at a generous six and a half stone as well.

Despite being the size of an average six year-old, she's probably not the World's largest Koi carp but she does hold the title of officially being the largest coloured Koi ever to be exported from Japan….

Bought for an undisclosed sum, by Rainbow Koi's owner Geoff Lawton, the giantess now has the run of an 8' square show tank in the centre of his shop in Melksham.

Derived from a species of Giant Carp, known as Kigoi, Su's ample dimensions are also down to something else:

"Big parents," says Geoff. "It's a bit like a racehorse really. She's had really good breeding and her parents were very big and she’s grown to be even bigger.

"And, of course, the Japanese know how to make fish grow. They select their breeding to grow very big fish and yes she is big…"

20 meals a day

Although the 17-year-old isn't thought to get any larger she has, according to Geoff, gained something since her arrival in Melksham:

"She has, like me, got a little broader," says Geoff.

"We feed her 12 to 20 times a day and she comes up to the surface and takes it right from your hand."

Despite the fish food bill, Geoff has no intention of selling his exceptionally large Koi not even for an exceptionally large offer:

"She's not for sale," says Geoff, "and I'd say 'No' to offers of 40,000 or even 50,000. I'm very fond of her.

"But they're total time wasters," he adds. "Once you start looking into the water at these pretty Koi time flies by and you won't see a bigger coloured Koi anywhere else."

Koi Cam

And if you can't make it to Melksham to see Su in the flesh you can always check out what she's up to on Rainbow Koi’s newly installed Koi Cam.

Strategically pointed at the Giant Carp’s favourite resting place… she's hard to miss.
