Swindon Big Screen

Swindon Big Screen

What is the Big Screen Swindon?

Wonderwall - the Big Screen in Wharf Green is coming soon....

Big Screen Swindon is much more than a massive telly in a vast open air living room.

The Screen is a window into BBC programmes, a mirror on Swindon and a magnifying glass for performances and events in the new square at Wharf Green.

And just like Alice viewers can even pass through the looking glass to play interactive games on screen whilst film makers will get a chance to show their work on the BBC.

What's on the box?

You'll see the latest local and national news, travel and weather and information about what's on in the Swindon area.

Big Screen

The Liverpool Big Screen

And get a grandstand view for BBC sport and national events with the atmosphere of a live crowd in a public arena that holds 2,000 people.

Films and Sport will be shown full screen, though the screen can be divided up to show moving images and information at the same time.

The screen is due to go live in May 2008, with a week of events and films and games to show how the screen can be used.

A Big Belly Telly

The screen has a big appetite, though, and wants material to feed it. Locally made films about Swindon, its heritage, communities and cultural life are especially welcome.

Big Screen Midsummer Magic 2006

The Liverpool Big Screen

Anyone can submit films and images for consideration to the Big Screen Producer who is based in Swindon.

The Screen, the focal point for the Wharf Green redevelopment, has already gone up in Swindon.

And, when it's up and running, will be on all day and all evening and be switched off overnight.

The Swindon Screen has come to Swindon through a partnership between the BBC and the New Swindon Company and is the ninth place to get a Big Screen and the first in the South of England.

What a waste of electricity having it on all the time!!!!

Me
I would like to say that I think the big screen will be a fantastic addition to Swindon - BUt I think that when the novility factor wears off it will just faid into the background. It is just one of thoes things that looks great on paper but just doesn't translate. I think that the council will have to work really hard to keep the intrest levles up - showing local talant, music fstivles, and football matches ect...

Im local , often in town the tv's good but im not really fussed about it , If england had qualified into the euro It would of been a good spot to watch the games have a smoke a few beers and chat to your mates but I certainly wont be doing that while foreign teams are playing , it won't be long before somebody covers it in paint or throws a brick at it anyway..

Tractor Boy
Anyone considered the carbon footprint of this, at a time when we're being psychologically persecuted for leaving our TVs on standby, or driving a Land Rover? I'll bet nobody has bothered setting up a few solar panels or a wind turbine to power the thing. Hypocrites!

James
Looking forward to the switch on. Will be vital for breaking news stories, and a lot of fun any other time!

It is definitely a very good idea due to swindon not having anything big like this. The amount of money being spent on it is definitely not a waste as this will draw a lot of the public to it. Wharf green will look eye very catching and hopefully beautiful.

Ami
It will only be worth the expense if they use that screen to shiowcase local talent and local ideas

kate
hehe i'll put on the kettle then,

Danny - Rotherham
Its Not Worth It Rotherham Is A Town About As Big As Swindon And All It Does Is Sit There The BBC Put Some England World Cup Games On It And About 8 People Turned Up Instead Of Wasting All That Money Just Buy Everyone In Swindon A TV(y)
