Mary Tamm as Romana in Doctor Who
Interview with Mary Tamm
Listen to our interview with actress Mary Tamm who played Doctor Who's companion Romana opposite Tom Baker in the seventies.
Fans who discovered Doctor Who following the recent incredibly successful return of the much-loved BBC1 sci-fi show, could be forgiven for forgetting the series has a long and varied history.
The original series started in 1963 and ran until 1989, and over the course of those 26 years seven actors played the Doctor.
And along the way there were many different companions who joined the Doctor on his travels through space and time.

One such companion was the Time Lady Romanadvoratrelundar (or Romana for short!) who accompanied the Fourth Doctor played by Tom Baker for one series in 1978/79.
The pair were on a quest across the galaxy to find the hidden segments of the Key to Time - a magical artefact needed to bring order to the universe.
Actress Mary Tamm who played Romana has enjoyed a highly successful career since leaving the world of Doctor Who behind.
Other notable television appearances include roles in Brookside, Jonathan Creek, Holby City and The Bill.
Mary recently guested on BBC Radio Wiltshire's Afternoon Show presented by Sue Davies. She was on to promote the release of the Key to Time DVD box-set - a collection of all the episodes in which she appeared in Doctor Who.
She spoke to Sue at length about her time on the series, attending fan conventions, working with the unashamedly eccentric Tom Baker and her Estonian roots.
