On the Towpath Trail

Heather Skull
A signwriter who specialises in canal work says she doesn't regret turning her back on a home to live on the water.

Ginny Barlow is currently living on a narrowboat on the Kennet and Avon canal near to Avoncliff and works painting names onto boats and creating decorations for them - she says that's about 80% of her work.

She is just one of the people BBC Radio Wiltshire reporter Heather Skull has met on the first day of her Towpath Trail as she walks from Limpley Stoke to Devizes.

Signwriter Ginny says there is a special feeling about the community which lives on the Kennet and Avon canal - she herself has been living on the K&A for about a year now.

"I like living on the canal," she said, "It's a nice mix of people from all walks of life. They may not all be best friends but they look out for each other and help each other."

"On the Kennet and Avon canal especially there's a strong sense of community. I might live on a house again one day, but for the time being I can't picture myself doing that, I'm quite happy living on a boat."
