Stonehenge - New 7 Wonder

One of the New Seven Wonders?

Stonehenge, shortlisted in a poll to identify the Seven Wonders of the Modern World, vies for votes....

Every one's heard of the Seven Wonders of the World but few have actually seen them.

Why?  Well, it's mainly because only one out of the seven 'Must See' destinations, the Pyramids at Giza in Egypt, is actually still standing.

So with the Seven Wonders of the World no longer actually giving wonder to the world, in 2000 it seemed the perfect time to start again and nominate Seven New Wonders.

Launched in 2000 by the New 7 Wonders Society, a Swiss group with the preservation of man-made heritage close to its heart, the hunt was on for New World Wonders...

With strict rules like all nominations having to be man-made, be in an "acceptable" state of preservation and to have been completed by 2000... 21 potential wonders were short listed and amongst them was Stonehenge.

In fact Stonehenge is the only British landmark to have made it in to the top 21.  Not only has it beaten off rivals in Britain like Big Ben, the Houses of Parliament and St Paul's Cathedral but has knocked some pretty impressive ones overseas out of the running.

Aerial view of the dome of St Pauls Cathedral.
Stonehenge beat off rivals like St Pauls

The Sistine Chapel in Rome and Notre Dame in Paris, for instance, both failed to make the cut.

But with 21 wonder wannabes battling it out for just seven places... Stonehenge is, to say the least, up against some pretty heavy weight competition including the Great Wall of China, the Taj Mahal, The Inca City of Machu Picchu in Peru and of course the Pyramids.

But with the New 7 Wonders due to be announced live on television around the world on 7th July, 2007, you've still got a bit of time left to cast your vote.

And a few different ways to do it.....

The Great Wall of China
...but is up against Great Wall of China

You can call 0870 062 3748 and choose option 18 to vote for Stonehenge.  (Calls are charged at the international rate with half the money raised going towards restoring ancient treasures around the world).

Or you can text: STONEHENGE to 61188. (Each text message costs 50p plus standard operator charges.)

Or you can visit the New7Wonders website, by clicking on the link below, and register to vote online:

Wonder means something unbelievable, something challenges your mind and wakes your brain up even if you don't like, so stand once by the great pyramid of Egypt and find an answer for the eternal question , how did the Egyptian build that thing in that time , tell me when you get an answer

the great pyramids is the best humankind have been made ever and forever

Aren't the BBC going to broadcast the announcement at Lisbon?

What's the need of changing the 7 wonders of the World!!! We should respect what our history has given to all of us and not try and change it. Because it is something past and there is no eraser that can erase past. Taj Mahal, that is a symbol of love! These days you will rarely find true love. Ppl should get learning from this place that love should be immortal. What a beautiful structure and the stripture and rose patterns on marble. It's simply beautiful. Of course, Pyramids have always amused me.

nicolas fernandez edgardo gutierres
easter islandstatues,chile

Taj mahal is woderful

Gill Hawken
I have been to Angkor Wat in Cambodia, also The Taj Mahal, the Pyramids, Sydney Opera House, The Statue of Liberty, Alhambra, Colosseum and Eiffel Tower. All very impressive, but my vote goes to Stonehenge. It holds facsinating secrets of how 4000 years ago men were able to move and place such enormous stones with supreme accuracy, only having a short time once a year to line up the stones and get the position right for shaddows of the heel stone to go through gaps in other stones to land on the alter stone at exactly at the summer solstice. It is a magical sight standing on Salisbury Plain when driving down the A303 to the West Country.

the alhambra
definitely the most magical experience i've ever feel

Leila Mattar Villela
I'm b brazilian lady but I'll vote in Alhambra. It's a wonderful building constructed by arabians, a very SENSIBLE, important and intelligent people. Leila Mattar VillelaRio de Janeiro/RJ/Brasil

Vivek SM
Vote for Tajmahal, Agra, India.

Definitly Petra

sudhir bhargava
Taj Mahal of India and Angkor Temples of Cambodia should qualify in 7 wonders

Michael Mead
Stonehenge ,along with Newgrange in Ireland (THE oldest manmade structure in the world), should be considered as seven wonder becuase the Celts were building great structures before most people.just beause they were the most westerly doesnt mean they should be marginalised. ANGKKOR WAT should also be considered because of its use of "procession" to calculate the measurements of the magnificent buildings.

Eusebio España Moreno

chichen Itza it´s a wonderfull site. magic place, made by the Mayan culture, Uniquely, there is some evidence to suggest the Maya appear

Visited numbers 1,2,4,5,6,8,11,13,15,16 and 17

Luis Osiris Garcia
Machu Picchu, is a magic place where you can find peace and at the time you would think how the inka people found the perfect place to build this wonder, I still feeling the emotions. Also, I went back on there on my dremas.

Jan Pettifer
Visited NY and toured around - what impressed me most about the Statue is how tall she is, and how beautiful = certainly worth seeing, I defy anyone not to have a lump in their throat when you see her, very inspiring....

I've been at chichen Itza, and it's a magic place, made by the Mayan culture, Uniquely, there is some evidence to suggest the Maya appear to be the only pre-telescopic civilization to demonstrate knowledge of the Orion Nebula as being fuzzy, i.e. not a stellar pin-point. And the telescope is at Chichen Iza Vote CHICHEN ITZA!!

r.f. bacharach von sorbach
I have been to all of the contesting "wonders" with the exception of "Chichen Itza" (which til now I had never heard of, I'm a bit ashamed to say - but I'm going to look it up after this email). The Taj Mahal (at Agra India) is a beautiful feat of architecture, but alas is really little "wonder" at all. In point of fact - The Red Fort across the river (though a colonially looted ruin now) is a genuine wonder. It is colassal, it is spectacular, it is awe inspiring in the extreme to imagine its very construction ... its glory prior to the "legal" looting of all its treasures. Impressions in the stonework where the gold, silver, precious jewels, stones, ivory, and marble were removed. Yes, the Taj Mahal is a thing of great beauty, especially with all of the intricately carved and inlayed, multi-colored marble - but a wonder it is really just not. Stonehenge - on the other hand - when viewed in the context of the time it was erected, is also a great and awsome, inspiring, and thought provoking wonder. (I even have it on my computer monitor as a screensaver). While I personally think that the structure was a superstructure / fortress within which, the area inhabitants could safely & securely store community "treasure" / harvests = and also retreat into (with livestock) and more easily defend against invading peoples. Whether the Vikings made it over that far, I'm not sure - but one thing is certain; if a community didn't have a way to adequately protect themselves from invaders / robbers - then if they had anything whatsoever of value (esp food during the winter season), they were like sitting ducks at constant risk of massacre & annihilation unless fully prepared. Thanks for allowing me to share my thoughts.

Ld. Keith Hamilton Miles-Smart Earle
Absolutely. Nothing more beautiful ... except the Westbury Whitehorse :)!

Taj Mahal, Agra, India this place i visted 4 time. evry time i saw it is new for me to see and i find peace in their.

I have seen Ankor wat,Taj Mahal, Pyramids of Giza, Petra and Eiffel Tower. I couldn't decided between Ankor wat ( can't get it's beauty from video or pictures ), Pyramids of Giza and Taj Maha which one is the best, They are so unique and gorgeous that it hard to compare. All three should come to the list.

My list is Stonenge, Pyramids, Tah Majal, Acropolis, Great wall, Macchu Picchu, Petra and Easter Island Statues. Eiffel Tower and other like it aren´t classical.

I'm doing a project for history on the statues of easter island, and I was just wondering why it should be one of the 7 wonders of the world. Please get back to me if you know!

Taj Mahal, Agra, India

Eiffel Tower, Paris, France Acropolis, Athens, Great Wall, China, Machu Picchu, Peru Hagia Sophia, Istanbul, Pyramids of Giza, Egypt Sydney Opera House,Australia

Mina skouteri
Acropolis, Athens, Greece Eiffel Tower, Paris, France Colosseum, Rome, Italy Stonehenge, Amesbury, United Kingdom Pyramids of Giza, Egypt Alhambra, Granada, Spain

we´ve visited Alhambra. it´s incredible and very wonderful.we are from Madrid, Spain VIVA ESPAÑA

I have been to the Acropolis, Colosseum, Eiffel Tower, Hagia Sophia, Neuschwanstein Castle, Petra, Statue of Liberty, Stonehenge, and the Sydney Opera House. This is a very difficult list! The only one that I feel is incredibly impressive is Petra.

Nicky Gardner
But take another look at the New 7 Wonders website. This seems to be merely a way of the organisers making a huge amount of money - it is a very commercial enterprise, relying on millions of folk calling premium rate phone numbers. And really.... can such heavily hyped and branded places as the Eiffel Tower really match the elusive appeal of the seven ancient wonders?

machu picchu shoul be one of the new7wonders! .. i went to cuzco-peru once with all my friends! .. and believe me! .. ITS AMAZING!! ... ... VOTE FOR IT!!

Sílvio Moraes - Brazil
I've been to St. Basil in Russia, Sydney Opera House, Christ Redemeer and Statue of Liberty. They are all wonderful, but I think Sydney Opera House is definitely the most impresive wonder!! It's impossible to even blink your eyes in front of it!!! Just amaizing and beautiful!!! St. Basil is also great!

i was just wondering y the 7 wonders of the world are important and y we are voting 4 new ones. p.s. i'm doing a 7 wonders of the world project for history.

rasha said mostafa
I have visited pirameds I am egyption it is an engeneering mirecal it deserves to be one of the seven wonders of hte world becouse at that time there were no machines for doing this in addition of the creative idea. thaks alot

i have seen all of these and they are wonderful!:)

Stonehenge is a marvel, To create it was just as large an undertaking as the pyramids, It represents mystery and intrigue, It is the oldest monument in the running, And what’s more is that it is in use today as a working temple, making it one of if not the oldest working temple in the world. The air of the place is one that lasts once you have felt it and nothing in the world comes close to the feelings being invoked in the temple during one of the major solar festivals. And the way it sits in the landscape gives the impression that it is not just the stones that are the temple but also the land.

I have been to evvery pplace in the world. I hate all of these places. I think Burger King is the greatest place on earth!

Fiona Campbell
I have been to the pyramids at Giza and they are definitely wonderous. There is something magical and mystical about the area. You would never know that you were standing only yards from Cairo itself.

I swear table mountain (Cape Town) ZA would be one of the seventh wonder.

What about the Lotus Temple in Delhi, India

I saw Acropolis , Colosseum , Christ Redeemer , Pyramids of Giza ,Kremlin , Taj Mahal , Hagia Sophia , Eiffel Tower and I have great memories from all of them . But I so also St. Petersburs , Prague , Rome and San Pietro in Vatican and I also saw lots of gothic , renesance and baroque castles and churches , and also modern ones . Let me tell you that every one of them was beautyfull in its own way . Personaly I cannot choose one of them and I think no one who saw them could . It's like the lotery . You can choose them , I can choose them , 6 billion people can choose them . You cannot make anyone acknolidge as THE NEW 7 WONDERS of the world 7 monuments picked up from a mixed of 3000 years of history and about 100 cultures and religions . Perhaps picking 7 for every historical period or atlist 100 historical-mixed-up new wonders can be a serious thing , but like this we can pick 7 new wanders every day , week , month ...Tell me : How serious do you see this ?

Wake up and smell the humus ! Don't you think ew became so poor ? There are 7 wonders of the ancient world , and now , after more than 2000 years we can find also 7 ? And whitch 7? One of then is one of the old 7 wonders , 2 of them (Colosseum , Acropolis) could not enter the first top 7 ... and the rest , a mix of ancient , middleage and modern architecture . Next time those people who like to mix things want to try something new , they can begin with this : take 1 burger , 2 limes , some soup , 1/2 l beer , 100g milk chocolate , put evrything in a blender an push the button . BON APPETIT !! :)))

Versailles Castle or the Lourvre
Beautiful and historically very important.

I have seen only four of these places but it is one we go back to several times a year-Neuchwanstein. We don't always visit the castle itself-my Uncle works there so we've had the special tour with no other tourists. We just love the whole area and its wonderful way of life. Gets my vote every time!!

Paula Herndon
Angkor is it.

Petra is amazing!

I think that the old wonders of the world should stay. They have so much history and so much work that has been put into it.Like the statue of Liberty except that was for show.

michael wook
machu picchu was the most beautiful place i´ve never visit i think that this place should be one of the new seven wonders

Y Chen
I've seen Eiffel Tower, Great Wall and Statue of Liberty. all are great. But if I have to pick one from these three, I'll choose Great Wall of China. You will be impressived by how huge it is and wonder how it was built at that time.

Ana Maria Costa e Silva
The Neuschwanstein castle makes me remember the fabulous days I spent there when I was just a student in the University of Coimbra. The region nearby is breathtaking.Thank you.

Angkor Wat is the most amazing on the list. It has a deep history and has been through the worst of wars. There is a lot of looting and the temple is scarred with bullet holes. It just shows that this large temple is an amazing place.

Machu Picchu !

Angkor Wat in Cambodia is the special New7Wonders of the world. The more beautiful of design with the stones. When you've visit Angkor Wat you will be want to come again.

Hemanta Bhatt
I have seen only 1 of the 21 man-made "wonders" that have found a place in the FINALS... the Taj Mahal. I must say one view of the Taj is enough to galvanize a visitor!! Howver, I haven't seen the other 20 so I can't really tell which one is the greatest. My choice would of course be the Taj - it's a symbol of love and affection which are the most-needed ingredients in today's world where war-like situation exists in every part of the world. Thinking of this on an entirely different note, selecting 7 wonders doesn't seem to be a good idea. What is the point in being so obsessed with the number 7? Point to ponder... If any of these "potential wonders" do not make it to the final 7 will they no longer remain a "wonder"???

Ho Chii
Out of 21 wonders , I am fortunate to have seen 19 of them except Machu Picchu and Angkor . I feel ambiance of Taj Mahal is outstanding specially in MoonLight . Its really a true symbol of love. No one can beleive this if they have not seen it . Great wall of China is an amazing concept and think about when that was built and how big that is .

Deblina Roy
TAJ MAHAL:It truly is a modern wonder. The fact that it still hasn't lost its granduer even after so many in itself a wonder. Unlike most ancient monuments...Taj mahal was constructed using marble only. It was decorated with emeralds, rubies, topaz and other gems that were plundered in the years that followed. Yet, the interiors continue to remain as colourful and bright as ever. The fact that it was built as a token of love in itself is a reason to give it a special status;especially as the world is brimming with hatred and violence today.Anyone who has visited the Taj Mahal wonders how something on such a small scale can still be so awe-inspiring and mesmerizing. The true beauty of the Taj Mahal can be appreciated in a full moon night. The monument is specially designed to reflect off the light fom certain quarters and retain it in others.

Sydney Opera house rules

kalplata pandey
simply amazing architecture, aesthetic sense & feeling wise.

In my opinion, everything people do these days can be considered a miracle.

Alina Beatrice
I've seen the Colosseum, the Eiffel Tower, the Acropolis, the Alhambra, the Pyramids of Giza and i think all of them, from diffrent reasons, are wonderfull.

I've been to the Great Wall, the Eiffel Tower, and the Sydney Opera House - not too impressive, eh? Personally, I think the Great Wall should have made it into the original list ages ago and it's about time the world redeemed itself! Vote for the Great Wall! I mean, just by size alone, it should qualify, not to mention its fascinating history! I mean, truthfully, how many of these wonders can compete with a giant, brick and mud, thousands-of-years-old fence? Just think of the practicality! VOTE FOR THE GREAT WALL!!!!

Lisa Will-Yoder
I have visited the Colosseum in Rome,Italy, Neuschwanstein Castle in Germany, and the Eiffel Tower in Paris, France. I was fortunate to see these and would like to see the other nominations. Out of these three, the Colosseum has lived for decades in the history books and in stories, as for the modern world, the Eiffel Tower should be considered.

Pyramid fan
I strongly believe That only ancient wonders such as Stonehenge, Easter Island, Machu Pichu, and great wall of china should get picked, and not modern ones like the Eiffel Tower, or Statue of Liberty. My most favorite wonder is Chichen Itza, because it is one of the last, and the oldest, remaining structures in the new world.

Acropolis, Athens, Greece Hagia Sophia, Istanbul, Turkey Colosseum, Rome, Italy Great Wall, China Machu Picchu, Peru Taj Mahal, Agra, Indiaan Pyramids of Giza, Egypt Beautiful !!

I Oppose Your name for this project as new seven wonders. because you should not forgot the importanse of the existing wonders and which is having more respect in people of all livings. specify any other name for your project and just look only for the constructions which builted after 1900 AD. then only you can find a good result and dont mix that list of existing seven wonders in this your project.

Ann Lloyd
I Have been to Great Wall of China, Stonehenge, Petra, Pyramids, Taj Mahal, Colosseum, Statue of Liberty, Eiffel Tower.I wouldn't have thought Eiffel Tower & Statue of Liberty were anything like a wonder of the world. Nice to see but not a wow!

Yes, I've seen the Colosseum, the Eiffel Tower, Neuschwanstein Castle, Petra, the Pyramids of Giza, the Statue of Liberty and Stonehenge. Of them all Petra was the most remarkable. That's an understatement. I hope to visit it again. Not that Stonehenge isn't a marvel. I traveled to England particulary to visit it, a dream I'd had since childhood. The Eiffel Tower should be among the seven wonders not so much because it impresses us today in our over-industrialized, techno-21st century but because of its influence on human thought. At its height, which was astounding in its day, it was the first piece of architecture to give humans an aerial perspective of their world that we now take so for granted. It was a mind altering experience across all the humanities, arts and sciences.

Stonehenge is part of a complete landscape. The whole area is a wonder, although the new road ar durrington Walls doesn't help and the new road scheme could destroy a great deal of recoveable ambiance and substantial amounts of archaeology.

I think Machu Pichu is just beautiful, it has to be one of the beautiful wonders of the world and the Kyomizu Templein Kyoto Japan is runner up

the tajmahal it should be in the top seven

Jacob Scott
been to stonehenge, 10/10!

Bruce (Chicago)
I have been to four . . . Statue of Liberty . . . Eiffel Tower . . . Colosseum, and of course, Stonehenge. I am a professional photographer, so I requested access to Stonehenge (in 2003) for 2 hours prior to the actual opening hour. It is truly a magical, mystical place, and I was alone there for 2 of those mystical hours! I hugged the stones, I laid within and on the stones . . . I actually "felt" Stonehenge! I dream of photographing Petra one day, but Stonehenge should definitely be one of the Modern Seven! It's probably the most incredible place I've ever been, and I can still feel it in my soul!

Judi Ruffle
Stonehenge has a history of not just an area but of a people that goes deep into our history. Time cannot erase it's image or its sense of awe.

Bill Coleman
Stonehenge definitely belongs on the list. I was there in September of 2005 and was awestruck by it's presence and the electricity eminating from the ground it stands on. Magical! It will always remain one of my seven personal wonders of the world.

i want to sy a video of stonehenge but its verry bouitifull

Pete Matthews
Not just stonehenge, but the whole area of the world heritage site.

Adrian Rudler
Stonehenge is wonderful, but Avebury stone circle is better!!

I have actually been to four of them. The Giza pyramids, Machu Picchu, Chitzen Itza and Petra, Jordan. I can't believe I have actually been to four that are on the list. This is so exciting. Perhaps you have an email where I can mail you photos. You should do that, will make this page much more interesting.....

I'd like to see in The 7 new wonders the Christ Redeemer because it is the best.

John lewis high wycombe should have made the list as well - its pretty awesome

Greenman, Wiltshire
Stonhenge is one of the most wonderful places to visit. When you see it you say to yourself how and why they bulit.Maybe it was to show us that they could !

sah jehan
i saw and so effected and i think you should give a chance to your destiny and see hagia sophia in turkey

Chichen Itza was incredible. It should be be in the top seven.

Matt NYC
what could be more "wonderous" than: Angkor, Chichen Itza, Easter Island, Great Wall, Machu Picchu, Pyramids of Giza and of course Stonehenge!

With a year to vote i'm going to spend it pondering a choice between Stonehenge and Easter island. My criteria would be that a) both represent enduring mysteries as well as 'wonders' and b) they both blow away all preconceptions about the technological capacities of the cultures to which they belong. Of course, there are others on that list which fit the bill (including some of the more modern ones ;) ...)

I expect the Meenakshi Amman temple in madurai will be selected as one of the new seven wonders.

viji padmanaban
wonderful monument. have to see by everyon. gives one more credit to India

Angkor in Cambodia is the special one among the New7Wonders of the world. What beatifull and attractive temple! if you visit Angkor, you will want to visit more!!!!

Have visted two on list, stature or liberty ny and chiken eatza mexico... i know the spelling on chiken eatza is wrong but that was the joke going round when i saw it in 1989. the great wall of china, stonehenge, and the kremlin, are on my short list of want to see's.

Frankel from the netherlands
Chichen Itza is definitely one of the worlds most marvelous buildings. Together with the pyramids of gizeh and the great wall of china and maybe also the Taj Mahal it are 4 for the 7 new onders in my opinion.

I've been in the city of TIKAL in Guatemala Central America, and I think it is a serius candidate to be one of the "seven new wonders" for far.

I've been to the Pyramides of Giza and the Colosseum. Both are wonderous... definitely a top seven. I have seen the Statue of Liberty from Manhattan and from a boat in the East River. Like most Americans, I adore the statue, but it is not even close to being a "Wonder".

There is a great wonder in India, Meenakshi Temple at Madurai. Why didn't people ignore it? I tried to poll numerous times but a voicemail only announcing that there is no phone number available. After that, it is giving a 6 digit number, in which, we can't hear one of the digit clearly. Waste of money for me.

Taj Mahal and nothin else..not only does this extremely intricately chiseled marble structure mesmerises you but its fantastic proprotions make it a must see and the best of its kind marvels ..
