The Cross Guns

PSI Ghostwatch Report: The Cross Guns 11/12/04

Dave Wood (PSI)
Swindon ghosthunting team Paranormal Site Investigators recently visited The Cross Guns pub in Avoncliffe in their search for paranormal phenomena. Read the report.

One of the few buildings in the historical 27-house hamlet of Avoncliffe, the Cross Guns overlooks the Avoncliffe Aqueduct at the crossing of the Kennet and Avon canal over the river Avon a few miles down from Bradford-upon-Avon.

Avoncliffe has been an important historic meeting place since the times of the Saxon Kings, and was later an important trading point.  The tiny village's trade importance helped save its fully functional train station from Beeching.

As the only common place, the Cross Guns has been an integral part of Avoncliffe life since the 16th century.  The modern-day pub, was built in the early 1600s and is woven into the rich folklore of the area; famous not-least for its several reported hauntings.

Two ladies - one in grey and one in blue - an elderly gentleman, and several dark shadowy figures are said to frequent the inn.  At the nearby aqueduct bridge, there have been reported 'time-slips'; a phenomena where people seemingly slip back to a different period in history.  Recently, staff have reported clear apparitions in the Inn's main bar and kitchens.

In the last few months the Cross Guns has undergone some restorations - an event anecdotally linked with increased paranormal activity and spiritual unrest.

On the night of the investigation, prior to entering the Inn, two of PSI's sensitives independently detected the unrestful spirit of a lady pacing across the bridges nearby in search of her drowned son.  A moving figure was seen following two other investigators as they came back across the bridge - the figure then vanished.

The most 'active' room during the investigation was the kitchen; several investigators saw a food order pad moving, and then moving on the command of a member of the team.  The area was checked for drafts, heat and other environmental factors which could have caused the bold movement, but none were identified.  The event was also witnessed by a journalist and photographer from the county's newspaper.

Whilst PSI's sensitives were satisfied that there was a presence in the Inn that night, findings did not stand up to the group's scientific scrutiny.  Environmental triggers did not vary significantly and despite corroborated eye-witness accounts, no photographic, audio or video evidence of use was captured.
