Arsenic and Old Lace in Bath - Sylvester McCoy interview

The classic screwball comedy thriller, Arsenic and Old Lace is to run at Theatre Royal Bath from Monday 28th February - Saturday 5th March starring a host of top names. Listen to our interview with actor Sylvester McCoy.

Arsenic and Old Lace has been a favourite since Cary Grant created the role of Mortimer Brewster in Frank Capra’s 1944 film.  Now a brand new production of this hilarious farce comes to Bath's Theatre Royal from Monday 28th February to Saturday 5th March as part of a major national tour.

A company of eleven is led by four of the country’s favourite actors; Angela Thorne (To The Manor Born), Brigit Forsyth (Whatever Happened to the Likely Lads), Sylvester McCoy (Doctor Who), and Huw Higginson (The Bill), for what is guaranteed to be an evening of riotous, hair-raising fun.

In a quaint Victorian Brooklyn house Mortimer’s two sweet and loveable maiden aunts have been perfecting their elderberry wine - it has quite a kick!  Little do their ‘gentlemen callers’ suspect that soon after partaking they will be heading off to the exotic climes of the Panama Canal courtesy of the sisters’ harmless, but totally mad nephew, who is building it in the basement!

Throw into the mix a plastic surgeon, a glamorous minister’s daughter, a policeman who wants to be a playwright and a Boris Karloff look-a-like, and you have all the ingredients for a hugely entertaining and intriguing, mad-cap evening in the company of Brooklyn’s most unusual residents – the Brewsters.

This production of one of the most hilarious and enduring thrillers ever written comes from the producers of The Shell Seekers (which played Bath last year starring Stephanie Cole), and the director of the acclaimed West End thriller The Woman in Black.

Awful play. A common swine could have produced better. I am appalled.

Rachel
just wanted to say what a brilliant play i chose to see for my A-Level exam. Enjoyed it so much and i am actually looking forward to my exam next week!

Katherine
Did it when I was in school, and was great to go and see it done professionally. All the characters suited their part perfectly.

I saw the Saturday evening performance at the Lyric Theatre in Salford. The play was such a treat to watch with a fine selection of actors. It has obviously been very well rehearsed and the set was very impressive. Sylvester demonstrated such energy and enthusiasm in his performance. It was very apt that an actor who played the Doctor on Doctor Who is playing Dr Einstein! The humour was very much like the Fawlty Towers episode with the dead body. There was some very fine dialogue and the plot was very well thought out. There was no swearing and the theatre was full of laughter. It makes a change from today's fast paced TV. Thank you Sylvester for signing my Dr Who magazines despite the very cold weather at the stage door.

Why does Sylvester McCoy rock so hard?

Richard O'Connor
Saw Sylvester in this play at the Salford Lowry. He and the rest of the cast were all perfect for their roles, and Sylvester was very accomodating afterwards stopping to chat and give me his autograph.

Sounds like a good play. McCoy's my favourite Doctor, though they were all good.

It's very confusing to find information about events in Bath on the Wiltshire website!
