Dave Prowse in Swindon

Interview with Dave Prowse

The man who played the Green Cross Code Man and also donned Darth Vader's costume for the Star Wars movies visited Swindon recently. Listen to our interview.

"Always use the Green Cross Code! Because I won't be there when YOU cross the road!" Kids of the 70s will have the phrase imprinted on their memories as they recall the Green Cross Code Man, Britain's very own superhero who in a series of adverts educated children about the dangers on our roads.

The man who played him - Dave Prowse - was in Swindon on Saturday 19th February to meet fans and sign autographs at memorabilia store Infinitely Better.

Some people may be unaware however that Dave played an even more famous role at the time. Over three classic movies he donned the suit and helmet of Star Wars' formidable villain Darth Vader.

In his long career as a screen heavy, Dave also appeared in the Hammer Horror films Frankenstein and the Monster from Hell and The Horror of Frankenstein and worked with legendary director Stanley Kubrick on A Clockwork Orange.

BBC Wiltshire's resident film geek Daniel Garrett chatted to Dave about having his heavy Bristolian accent overdubbed for Star Wars and why he wasn't asked to cameo in the recent prequels. He also talked of how many children's lives were saved as a result of The Green Cross Code adverts and what it was like to work with movie greats such as Peter Cushing.
