It's a ten hour, online internet course which teaches the basics of using the internet. In the course learners learn all about web pages, e-mail and the other things they will use on the internet.
We have created the course to encourage learners not to fear their computers or the internet.
By using a guided discovery learning approach we are aiming to give learners the confidence to try and guess the best way to do things and have a go when they don't know the answer.
The course has ten units, each lasting one hour and is intended for beginners, working at Level 1 (Intermediate 1 in Scotland), although some of the content touches on common objectives found in Level 2 ICT courses.
What is in the course?
The course is made up of ten units. Each unit contains:
Up to 4 interactive guides
Up to 4 quizzes
An online mission designed for learner to use new skills
A Weakest Link Quiz
The course also includes a guide to using a mouse and keyboard, jargonbuster and course help feature.
We are currently developing a series of games for the site, including one based on EastEnders. Sign up to the newsletter to find out when the game is launched.
Is there a progress chart for students to fill in?
Yes, the printable course progress chart allows students to keep a record of which guides, quizzes and extra activities they have completed.
What is in each unit?
Each unit consists of between two and four interactive guides and quizzes, a mission and a Weakest Link quiz.
The interactive guides are designed to encourage students to make informed choices and attempt new things in unfamiliar ICT environments.
Each guide consists of a presentation stage, a short consolidation quiz and a practical section where the student can use new skills.
In guides where new software environments and functions, such as a browser and browser buttons, are introduced additional drill exercises called 'Practice zones' are included to help orient students.
We are planning further material to support the course ranging from worksheets to an EastEnders themed adventure game.
What is the tutor newsletter?
The tutor newsletter - 'The Coach' is the best way to keep up-to-date with the latest changes to the site as well as the world of ICT as a basic skill.
The newsletter includes:
