It's a ten hour, online internet course which teaches you the basics of using the internet. In the course you learn all about web pages, e-mail and the other things you can use on the internet.
You can do the course at home or at one of the hundreds of WebWise partner learning centres around the UK.
After you complete the course material you'll be able to take an assessment that leads to a nationally recognised qualification.
What sort of qualification will I get?
The WebWise Online Course can lead to the following qualifications:
City and Guilds 7261 Information Technology
OCR CLAIT Stage 1
LCCIEB Practical Computing
SQA Internet Basics.
Where do I take the assessment?
Unfortunately you can't take the assessment at home on your computer - it is just not secure enough.
However, there are hundreds of partner centres around the UK where you can take the assessment. They also offer other IT courses - many of which are free.
Use our coursefinder to find the centre nearest to you and ask for details of the WebWise assessment.
You can also call our coursefinder national helpline on 08000 150 950. Ask for a centre near you that offers the WebWise assessment.
What do I need to know about the assessment?
The WebWise Online Course assessment takes place in a supervised assessment centre. The one hour assessment is delivered online and is made up of twelve multiple-choice questions and three short practical tasks:
Multiple choice
You will be asked twelve multiple choice questions, with three questions on-screen at a time. You will be able to select your answers from three questions before 'submitting' your answers and moving on.
Each question will either be in the form of a sentence to be completed or a question, sometimes asking you if something is true or false. You will have four options to choose from.
The questions will assess your understanding of the things you'll have learned in the course.
Practical Tasks
You will have three short practical tasks to complete, designed to assess your ability to use the basic functions of a web browser, search for information using a search engine and use the basic functions of an e-mail package.
The tasks use the BBC simulated web browser, search engine and e-mail package you'll have used in the course.
During the test
When all candidates are ready, a member of the supervising staff will tell you a password to start the test. You will have an hour to complete the assessment. Supervising staff will monitor time. You will be presented with the on-screen multiple choice questions before moving on to the 3 practical tasks.
To pass the BWW assessment you must get at least seven out of twelve multiple choice questions right and successfully complete all three tasks (browsing, searching, e-mail).
When you've finished the assessment, you will be presented with an on-screen 'scorecard' showing your results. You will be prompted to print this out and pass it to a member of the supervising staff.
REMEMBER
Take your time - you are more likely to make mistakes if you rush.
Read the questions or instructions carefully before answering.
You have two attempts for each part of the practical tasks and will be directed to have another go if you're not right the first time.
