How do I search for software I can download? Print this article

You can search any of the search engines but if you aren't sure you can search special software directories by giving a description of the program.

The net is great not only for getting e-mails and web pages but also for downloading programs that can help us with our everyday lives.

For example, you might want a media player that will allow you to listen to online radio stations - downloading the program means we no longer have to run out to the shops.

Search

If you know the name of the software you want you can search for it by name or by the name of the company who makes it.

So if you wanted to download RealOne, the media player made by Real.com you could search using your favourite search engine. You can then download the program directly from Real.com.

Look for the word 'Downloads' on companies' homepages to reach their software area.

Software directories

If you aren't sure which program you want you can go to one of the software directories online. Here are just a few of them:

Tucows

Download.com

CDnet downloads

Jumbo

Macshare.com (for Mac downloads)

The great thing about these directories is that you can search or browse. So, if you wanted to find an program that will block pop-up windows you just type 'pop-up' into the search box.

Or, if you aren't quite sure what you want you can browse the list of programs by category. The games categories are a fun way to find downloadable games online.
