The most common way to get broadband is via ADSL.

All the necessary steps to getting ADSL can be done for you by a good internet service provider, but here's a quick guide to the basics.

(That way you can cut through the jargon and the sales pitches!)


ADSL availability

The first thing is to check if ADSL broadband is available where you live.

95% of UK telephone exchanges can now provide a broadband service.

ADSL is now available nearly everywhere in the UK

If you live in a rural area however, or more than 5 miles from your local exchange, you should check if broadband is available by visiting Broadband Checker


Opening a broadband account

If broadband is available, you'll need to choose a broadband service provider.

There are hundreds to choose from, but here are some useful tips:

If you already have a dial-up account, it's worth checking your ISP's website to see if they also provide a broadband service. As you are already a customer, they might offer you a good upgrade deal.
