You need a new high-speed modem for broadband and special microfilters for your phones.

Unfortunately your current dial up modem won't work with a broadband connection.

Don't panic though - most often your broadband provider will be able to give you everything you need to get started.

ADSL

The usual way to get broadband is via an ADSL service. This uses your phone line to give broadband access, but does not stop you using the phone normally.

To get ADSL you will need to have your phone line upgraded (called 'line activation') and to have opened a broadband account.

You will also need a new high speed modem. Either your ISP will provide this for you, or you can buy one.

There are basically three types of ADSL modem. Simple ADSL USB modems, ADSL routers or ADSL Wi-Fi routers.

Don't worry about the jargon which comes with these, here's a quick overview.

USB ADSL Modem

An ADSL modem is just a faster version of an ordinary modem. Some broadband ISPs will give you one of these when you start a subscription.

It's worth checking on their website or in their literature as this can be cheaper than buying one.
