Flooding in Jamaica by Alex Deakin
Heavy rain has lashed much of the Caribbean over the past few days with Jamaica baring the brunt of the rain.
Further heavy rain is expected across the island through today with a high risk of flooding and landslides. Yesterday, officials closed the Bog Walk gorge in St. Catherine following massive flooding caused by rising water levels from the Rio Cobre. Dozens of roads across the island were closed as they were inundated with muddy floodwaters and residents living in low-lying areas were being prepared to evacuate as the rains continued. A very slow moving frontal system close to the east of the island was responsible for the heavy rain and thunderstorms and is expected to bring more storms to Jamaica over the coming weekend.
Meanwhile, across the Atlantic Ocean, heavy rain and floods have wreaked havoc across many parts of Morocco with scores of people loosing their homes. Over the past week, 11 people have lost their lives in the northeastern port town of Nador after their homes collapsed during torrential downpours. Forecasters are warning of further rain across northwestern parts of Morocco over the next few days which are likely to cause further flood problems.
