Colder weather descends upon parts of Europe by Steph Ball

Much of Europe has been enjoying a charmed life as warm weather continued into Autumn. The UK has seen its warmest September on record and October is expected to be up there as one of the warmest too.

As we leave October behind, a cold northerly blast is set to change all that, bringing falling temperatures across the UK and parts of Europe. Chief Forecaster at the Met Office, Nick Grahame remarked on how the change to colder conditions this week could bring a shock for many people, especially after such a long mild spell.

From Wednesday, temperatures at night are expected to fall below freezing across many parts of the UK. Actual daytime temps this week will be around the average for the start of November. It will feel even colder than that though due to the drier nature of the air which is of a polar origin.

Meanwhile across the globe some areas have already been hit by colder weather. Mid- October saw heavy snowfalls across parts of Americas Midwest, with Buffalo having its snowiest October day since records began 137 years ago. Colorado and more recently North Dakota have seen additional snowfalls.

Australia and New Zealand should be advancing through spring, but even here some parts have experienced some cold weather. Early October saw southerly winds bring icy conditions and snow falls to parts of New Zealand, and across SE Australia there have been some severe frosts this month. Whilst only this week, Tasmania has seen its first snow fall in 30 years.
