Contrasting weather from around the world. by Isobel Lang
Whilst our weather here in the UK is still rather quiet, there’s plenty to talk about elsewhere.
Starting in the Southern Hemisphere, the rain manufactured a result for England at the cricket. In fact, many parts of South Africa have seen showers, some pretty lively ones too.
Latest reports are saying that parts of Australia have had unusual amounts of rain recently. In fact, Western Victoria has just experienced its wettest January for 21 years. This was helped to some extent by some spectacular thunderstorms during the latter part of the month. Geelong recorded 86mm of rain, over 3 inches, in just 2 hours! The forecast is looking very wet during this week, as a deep area of low pressure moves east across Tasmania and Victoria.
An active front has brought heavy, persistent rain across parts of South America. Recently, Parana in Argentina recorded 89mm rain in 36 hours, which is above the monthly average of 79mm, so fairly significant. This area of extensive rain is set to spread across Uruguay, Paraguay and southern Brazil.
Across the USA, the recent ice storm is still making the headlines. The ice and snow across Georgia and the Carolinas brought severe travel disruption, with flights and rail services cancelled. Fortunately the USA should get a break from bad weather for a few days, so a welcome relief.
Finally, to Europe, and it is showing signs of warming up a little. Western Europe will see a good deal of fine weather with some sunshine across France and Spain. Eastern areas are still at risk from heavy rain or snow, as the deep area of low pressure eases eastwards. Greece and Turkey could see some very nasty weather later in the week.
