Snowstorm blankets the Colorado Rockies by Rob McElwee

A winter storm has been working its way across central parts of the USA in the past 24 hours, bringing some wintry weather to higher ground in particular.

The Colorado Rockies have seen appalling conditions, with very heavy snow, accompanied by strong winds gusting up to 75mph, giving blizzard conditions at times.

While the snow may be very welcome for ski resorts, it has been a hazard for travellers, with a large number of accidents being reported due to the icy roads. A number of roads closures have been enforced across the higher parts of Colorado due to snow-blocked roads.

Snow and blizzard advisories have been issued for the areas worst affected, with up to 12 inches expected before the storm finally clears away. The weather conditions are set to improve significantly in the next few days, as pressure builds. This will bring dry and sunny weather by day, but cold and frosty conditions at night.
