Perth set for a sizzling start to the New Year by Steph Ball
Perth, Western Australia, is currently experiencing a spell of hot weather which looks set to bring a sizzling start to the New Year.
Average temperatures for Perth late December – early January should be 27-29C (81-84F). Over the last few days though temperatures have been steadily climbing and today, Monday, reached 37C (99F) at Belmont Perth Airport.
The current hot spell has been brought to Perth by a change to easterly winds. Easterly winds prevail across Perth during the summer and bring hot, dry conditions from the desert interior.
The north and south of the state contrast in weather, with the north experiencing a more tropical climate and summer rains. This will be evident over the next few days. While hot, dry weather is forecast to take Perth into the New Year, to the north an active trough is expected to move into the Kimberley region. This is forecast to bring heavy rains and a threat of flooding.
Perth residents are set for a scorching start to 2009, with the Australian Bureau of Meteorology forecasting a high of 39C (102F) on New Year’s Day.
