Summary of UK Weather for Friday 29 February 2008.
A complex and active frontal system approached the UK during the early hours of this morning, and has been moving east throughout the day, bring very unsettled, wet and windy conditions. It was a cloudy start for all this morning. A band of rain moved into Northern Ireland and western Scotland early this morning, and continued to spread east, affecting much of Scotland, Wales and northern and central England by midday, and southern England during the afternoon. This rain was rather persistent and heavy at times over coastal and high ground areas in the west, whereas further east, the rain was lighter and more patchy in nature. Following the main band of rain, clearer conditions spread in from the northwest, bringing sunny spells and frequent showers to much of Scotland, Northern Ireland, northern England and northern Wales. Winds have been strengthening throughout the day, and have been very strong and blustery from mainly a westerly direction. Widespread gales and isolated severe gales have been affecting parts of Scotland and northern England during the afternoon and evening. Temperatures have been mild for the time of year.
