Time for Brussels and cold Turkey. by Darren Bett

Cold air has been flooding out of Russia across northern and eastern parts of Europe and toward Asia and Africa allowing temperatures to plummet for many.

The first blast of cold air from Russia sank southwards towards Turkey and northeastern parts of Africa.

It was certainly a case of cold Turkey last night in the northern town of Kars, which is close to the Caucasian Mountains and Georgia, where there was a minimum of (-29) Celsius, well below the usual (-11).

There was a pyramidal shiver sent into Egypt on Tuesday night with temperatures dropping to 1C in Minya, just over 100 miles south of Cairo. The usual minimum for this area is about 8C.

The other parcel of cold air swept westward toward Norway, where people in the town or Roros had to throw a few extra logs on the fire as the cold air brought a bitterly cold night with temperatures falling twenty degrees below normal, with a low of minus thirty-four Celsius.

The cold air made it into the Low Countries and northern parts of France, where in Brussels, Belgium, the temperatures fell just below freezing. The city would normally have a minimum temperature at this time of year of 6C (43F).

Temperatures in Nancy, France, fell to minus four degrees Celsius, which is nine degrees below average. Caen in Lower Normandy had an extremely chilly night as the mercury dropped to minus ten Celsius, well below the seasonal norm of 3 Celsius.

In the UK people have been feeling the effects of the cold weather too with temperatures on Tuesday night falling to minus four in Glasgow and Edinburgh, minus five in Salisbury and even minus one in London city centre. A low of minus seven was reported just outside Oxford last night and temperatures are expected to be even lower in some spots tonight.

Let’s just hope that Santa delivered plenty of hat, scarf and gloves sets this Christmas!
