Heavy rain soaks northern Oklahoma by Steph Ball
Two days of heavy rain across northern Oklahoma has left some places experiencing the worst flooding in over 50 years. The popular holiday campsite of Turner Falls in the Arbuckle Mountains near the city of Davis was hit by 76mm of rain in just 24 hours leading to flash floods.
The deluge of water forced the closure of the main road into the park leaving over 1500 campers stranded. Park manager Tom Graham explained; “one minute everything was fine, then 20 minutes later a wave came through causing us to shut the road.” Despite a warning made yesterday to the holiday makers of the possibility of flooding many of them stayed only to become inundated by the water.
An exceptionally high amount of rainfall has hit other parts of the state with the nearby city of Madill reporting just over 100mm of rain between Saturday and Sunday evening. The National Weather Service has since issued a flash flood warning for many counties and with more rain expected over the course of Monday night people are preparing themselves for the worst.
