The day the snow fell. by Dan Corbett

USA

A major winter storm has been lashing the state of Maine since Christmas Day and has dumped over a foot of snow since in many of the northern towns. At Eagle Lake an astonishing 22 inches (56cm) had fallen in the period from Sunday until this morning. More snow is forecast to fall through today with a finishing total of over 30 inches (76cm) expected.

Further west another winter storm brought 24 inches (61cm) of snow to the ski resort of Tahoe in the Sierra Nevada and close-by Heavenly received just over a foot.

CANADA

A fierce storm with strong winds swept across the northeast of Canada cutting power to thousands of homes in Quebec. The storm is expected to move out toward the Atlantic bringing northerly winds on the back of it and is forecast to dump 60cm (23 inches) of snow in parts of New Brunswick and Nova Scotia.

RUSSIA

There has been a series of avalanches following heavy snow on the Caucasus Mountains, in the Dagestan district which borders with Georgia. The avalanches have closed many of the Transcaucasus routes as well as killing two people.

UK

Here in the UK heavy snow has been moving into southern and eastern counties of England. The heaviest of the snow so far has been in the southeast of England towards Kent and Sussex, where there have been reports of up to 12cm (5 inches) of snow on the Downs.

The heavy snow showers are expected to continue to fall through tonight and into tomorrow for many eastern parts as the snow moves slowly northwards. There could be as much as 10-15cm of snow in places, especially for the Lincolnshire Wolds, Fens and the Downs.
