Rapid snow-melt could bring problems to the Midwest & Scotland by Sean Batty
You may have read in our world weather news yesterday that a massive winter storm slammed into the U.S. during the weekend bringing chaos.
The affected areas are preparing for a new problem in the coming days as the weather turns a lot milder and low pressure brings more unsettled weather - this time in the form of heavy rain rather than snow. The National Weather Service (NWS) have issued a hazard warning for rapid snowmelt over the next few days which will cause small stream and river flooding across the Midwest.
However, the rain will bring a little relief for southern California, Arizona and some parts of Texas after a very dry winter.
Closer to home in Scotland Tuesday morning saw heavy falls of snow across the higher ground. The Highlands was worst affected where the police were warning drivers not to travel on the A85, A84, A82 and A827 in particular. They described these roads as snow bound and said that they were already dealing with a number of recoveries after cars became stuck.
The Met Office are warning of some significant accumulations of snow (up to 10cm) in the mountains through the rest of the morning, before it turns to rain later on Tuesday. This is expected to bring a similar fate to that in the Mid-west of the U.S. Rapid snowmelt in the Highlands accompanied by heavy rain today, could lead to flooding in some areas.
