New Snowland by Dan Corbett

A deep area of low pressure swept across Newfoundland, Canada on Saturday afternoon bringing with it heavy snow and strong winds, causing major disruption to the island throughout the weekend.

The eastern side of the island was worst hit by intense blizzards which dumped an incredible 70cm of snow during Saturday afternoon, blocking many roads, shutting the island’s international airport for several hours and paralysing the capital city of St John’s.

Snow was not the only problem, but also very strong winds which caused some structural damage to buildings. During the storm winds gusted up to 80mph, blowing the snow into drifts, which measured as high as 1.5 metres burying cars and blocking shop windows.

The Meteorological Service of Canada is expecting the weather to stay very cold with a series of low pressure systems set to swing through during the coming week, bringing more heavy snow. On Monday, alone an additional 10-15cm of snow is expected to fall in some parts of the island bringing yet more travel headaches. Many parts of Ontario and Quebec already have warnings in force for very high wind chills and blizzard conditions, which is all heading eastwards toward Newfoundland…
