Winter storm heading for NE USA by Tomasz Schafernaker
A large storm which developed over central USA on Monday is set to track eastwards over the next 24 hours, bringing snow to a number of north eastern states. The storm has so far created widespread icy conditions across Oklahoma and Missouri, leading to black ice and power shortages.
Forecasters at the National Weather Service expect the storm to bring heavy snow to parts of the Midwest and northeast over the coming days. It is made up of two systems that follow on from each other. The first is the weaker of the two, and is expected to bring light snow from the central plains to the Ohio Valley through Tuesday night.
The second wave will follow on behind and is forecast to bring heavy snow Philadelphia, Washington and New York. Between 3-6 inches (7.6-15.2cm) of snow is expected to fall in Philadelphia on Wednesday, before the sleet and rain spread in.
Only 1.1 inches (2.79cm) of snow has fallen on the Independence Mall in Philadelphia since the first of December 2008, meaning the storm could bring the first significant snow to the city in a year.
