Cyclone Nisha heads for Tamil Nadu. by Steph Ball
Cyclone Nisha is expected to make landfall on Tamil Nadu’s coast around midday local time today. The Indian Met Department (IMD) issued a cyclone warning earlier today, naming the storm Nisha, and warning of heavy rain and gales.
The storm first developed early on Tuesday over Sri Lanka, in the southwest Bay of Bengal. During Tuesday the cyclone brought heavy rain and strong winds across Sri Lanka. It has enhanced the NE Monsoon rains bringing further flood woes, especially across the north of the country. Some residents, already in temporary shelters, have been forced to uproot again.
Eastern Tamil Nadu has also been feeling the effects of the storm. Heavy rain since Sunday has already triggered flash floods across seven of the states coastal districts, leaving 20 people dead.
At 0900 GMT Wednesday, Cyclone Nisha’s winds were recorded to be around 60mph (100 kmh). The IMD is advising that as much as 250mm (10 inches) of rain may fall across parts of Tamil Nadu and Puducherry during the next 24 hours.
