Severe storms sweep the U.S Plains by Sean Batty

Severe weather has battered the U.S. bringing severe damage to some parts.

Over 70 homes in Southern Minnesota were completely destroyed and dozens damaged as thunderstorms swept the state bringing strong gusty winds with them.

Minnesota also saw multiple tornadoes, and the one that caused the most damage stayed together for at least 20 miles. The twister was classified an F-3 on the 6 point Fajita scale of intensity, where 6 is the most intense. Winds inside the funnelling cloud whizzed round at an incredible 158-206mph.

States such as Indiana also had wind gusts during the storms of up to 100mph, which blew down many trees and knocked out power to thousands.

Hail the size of grapefruits was reported alongside tornadoes and severe thunderstorms in the Dakotas.

The city of New York was put under a rare tornado warning for about half an hour yesterday, but there were no reports of any touchdowns.

In Wisconsin storms thundered across the skies bringing several inches of rain to some parts while lightning electrocuted and killed 12 cows which were being held in a metal barn.
