Stormy weather causes problems in Indiana and Cuba by Kaye Forster
Severe storms have been battering parts of the USA in recent days. A line of thunderstorms pushed across the state of Indiana during Wednesday and Thursday, bringing torrential rain, large hail and flooding.
Worst hit was the area of Evansville. Here, strong winds brought down large trees which damaged houses and power lines. Thousands were left without power and windows were reported to have been blown out of several buildings and houses.
The clean up operation has begun, but the people of Indiana are not out of the woods yet, as more stormy weather is forecast over the next few days.
Meanwhile, heavy rain has been causing problems in parts of Cuba. Havana, the Cuban capital recorded 120mm (almost 5 inches) of rain in just two hours. This quickly led to flash flooding in many areas.
Water cisterns at the city’s hospitals and offices have been contaminated, and thousands of homes have been left without electricity. The rain has also suspended Cuba’s national baseball championship. Luckily though the rain has now moved away and the forecast is for fine, dry and sunny weather for the next few days.
