Record high temperatures in Boston by Susan Powell

On Monday 23 April Boston, Massachusetts smashed temperature records for this day. The mercury rose to 30 Celsius (86F) at Logan International Airport. This broke the record of 29.4 Celsius (85F) dating back to 1908.

This is 17 degrees above the average temperature expected for Boston in April, which is normally 12 Celsius (54F).

The taste of summer weather for the region has increased the risk of brush fires due to the combination of low humidity and heat, with the lack of surface vegetation. Since the weekend, numerous brush fires have been spawned across the state. With strong winds fuelling the fires, fire-fighters have been kept busy.

It is expected that Mondays heat will dissipate during the course of this week and temperatures would return to average for the time of year.

The National Weather Service has now called off a red flag warning for the state but fire watches remain in place for a good portion of Massachusetts.
