Central Canadian province hit by floods by Steph Ball
In the Red Earth Cree Nation 300 km north of Saskatoon, waters in the Carrot River are expected to recede over the next couple of days, allowing the 600 people who fled the area to return to their homes by mid-week.
Meanwhile the outlook for other parts of the province is not as promising, as the water levels in Fishing Lake, 200km east of Saskatoon have risen 5cm a day. Although water levels have yet to peak at Fishing Lake, buildings have already been flooded by the surging water and melting ice.
On Monday, seventeen Saskatchewan communities were placed under a state of emergency due to flooding, with officials advising residents to focus on moving their belongings rather than trying to hold the water back.
Duane McKay from the Department of Public Safety said “We don’t want to do a mandatory evacuation because there are some salvage operations still going on.”
With the water predicted to rise another 30-38cm in the next few weeks residents around Fishing Lake are preparing themselves for the worst.
