First snow of the season arrives for many - USA by Steph Ball
A vigorous autumn storm has brought Colorado and Nebraska their first snow of the season this week and an early taste of winter. The storm pushed southeast and out of the Rockies on Tuesday night, bringing strong winds, heavy rain and dumping around 20cm (8inches) of snow across parts of Colorado. The winter weather blasted into the mountains causing disruption to travel, though bringing an early boost to the ski season.
Yesterday the storm continued to bring a wintry mix of weather and strong winds across the Central Plains. In O’Neill, Central Nebraska, snow fell during most of the day, the snow and high winds causing damage to trees and causing power outages.
The storm has been dragging down cold air from Canada. On Wednesday, Ottawa also saw its first snow of the season, while there were also reports of snow across many north-eastern states of the US, including parts of New York and Pennsylvania. While the storm will wind down today across the Central Plains, it is forecast to move into eastern states of the US for the weekend. It is expected to pep up here as it receives a boost of warm, moist air from the Gulf of Mexico.
