Tropical cyclone kills 45 people in SE India. by Steph Ball
A tropical cyclone, India’s anticipated storm over the past few days hit land on Friday, bringing heavy rain to the south east coast. The regions largest state, Andra Pradesh received over 10 inches (254mm) of rain, more than the combined total from the monsoon so far. At least 45 people were killed by the rising floodwaters, which also damaged buildings leaving many homes without power.
A major relief operation is now underway to help those that have been made homeless by the storm. Preeti Sudan, Andra Pradesh’s disaster commissioner, said: “we have opened up 95 relief camps for those 56,000 people that have been displaced.”
Medical teams have also been called upon to help prevent the spread of water bourn diseases as the river waters continue to rise.
Storms and monsoon rains kill hundreds of people across India every year, and with more heavy rain expected to lash the south east over the oncoming days, locals are bracing themselves for the worst.
