We have had our first taste of winter here in the UK with snow on Thursday evening and the cold and widespread ice at the weekend. Southern states of the US have also seen some very bad weather over the past few days.
In Texas, wet weather has been causing problems. El Campo, near to the Gulf of Mexico, had 15 inches of rain. This caused flooding with people having to evacuate their homes. The heavy showers continued to plague southern parts of Texas through Sunday night.
For southern California, it was snow causing difficulties for some, but fun for the children. A weekend snow storm brought at least three feet of snow over the San Gabriel Mountains and several inches of snow for San Diego County. The wintry weather is forecast to clear on Monday.
Across the border in Mexico, things have turned rather heated on the football pitch. In the past, many a British football pundit, coach or player has suggested that the climate has affected the team’s performance. Mexican Footballers are making a stand. Kick-off on Sunday was scheduled for midday, with temperatures in the sunshine reaching 40C (104F). Claiming it was impossible to play in that heat, the game was called off as the Mexican Football Federation would not change the kick-off time
The weather has also interfered with cricket. India are playing South Africa in Kanpur which is in the central north area of India. Dense fog, which often forms at this time of year, meant that the start of the third day’s play was delayed.
Trinidad and Tobago have seen some devastating weather recently. Just over a week ago flooding and landslides killed two people on Tobago and this weekend very heavy rain hit Trinidad. There was more than 8cm (3 inches) of rain on Sunday, which resulted in flooding and more landslides. One person was killed and hundreds of homes were damaged.
