Stormy weather brings flooding to Greece by Kaye Forster
Severe storms caused major disruption to many southern parts of Greece on Saturday afternoon, just days after a separate line of storms forced authorities to declare a state of emergency elsewhere in the region.
Thunderstorms packed with torrential rain and gusty winds caused severe flooding to many homes, businesses and buildings in the area. Around 30 homes were flooded in the southern Peloponnese and several occupants had to be rescued by fire crews. Three cars were swept away by torrents of flowing water, while landslides halted roads and train-lines in parts of the region.
On Tuesday last week, just four days prior to this event, parts of the Aegean islands, a tourist destination east of the Peloponnese, were also struck by storms. Heavy downpours flooded homes, hotels and businesses and forced many ships into port. A state of emergency was declared in parts of the Aegean during Wednesday. Also affected were the popular islands of Rhodes and Crete, where many holiday-makers were left stranded.
There will be further showers over the next couple of days but the weather should settle down from Tuesday.
